"A Model of Aros in the year 980
The major part of the town is surrounded by a solid rampart, a stockade, and a moat. The rampart is closed towards the sea, and in order to get inside the town defences [sic] people must pass through one of the three gates or walk up the steps by the fishermen's lodges near the river mouth. Near these steps, but inside the rampart, are houses occupied by fisherman.
Ships can berth by the jetty situated between the river and the stockade on the rampart. A wooden bridge is easing the passage across the river at Immervad. However, the bridge is built in such a way that part of it can easily be removed in order to allow ships to sail further up the river.
Centrally located in the town is the old pagan burial site, soon to be taken over by the Christians, who will build a wooden chapel here. The first stave church west of the fortified town will later be suceeded by the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (which was later turned into a monastery church). In this rural environment with cornfields and meadows, a new town district will spring up.
Scale 1:400"
It should be noted that some of the information here, including the placement of a pagan burial ground in the center of the old town is not supported by archaeological finds, and is debated by many scholars.
