"The iron from the bog finds is so well preserved that, in spite of the 1,800 years that have elapsed, the original surface can still be seen. When a sword blade is cut through, it becomes visible that the blade is welded together from several pieces of iron where soft iron is blended with hard in a pattern (a form of damascening). The sword maker's technique was exceptionally good. Welding took place in the blacksmith's forge; two pieces of iron were heated up to the right temperature, hammered together and the edges were hardened."
I believe that this portion of the display is a pair of reproductions, in order to visually demonstrate the technique described. The exhibit was unclear, however.
