Please note that all descriptions which present factual information are based on a lecture given at the sites shown by Else Roesdahl on June 25, 2008.
The reconstructed longhouse at Fyrkat, although built in 1985, is already exhibiting some decomposition at the base of the beams. Similar decomposition has been found in the archaeological record within the fortress, and the lack of apparent attempts at repair indicates that the fortress may have been abandoned as little as 20 years after its construction.
